a snowy day recipe.
bee made this but it was so delicious i had to share. we heated milk and chopped up bittersweet chocolate [70% cacao] to super fine pieces and whisked it into the milk. we added cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract and topped it with homemade whipped cream and another dusting of nutmeg. the richest but most delicious hot chocolate i’ve ever had.

i love the way it sounds when it snows. or the way it doesn’t sound. how i can see something happening far away but i can’t hear it. the compartmentalization of sound and how so much of it never reaches your ears. refreshing and intriguing.
in Your presence, God, i’m completely satisfied
one of my highlights from camp this past weekend - we had a group of VERY energetic seven year olds that i led a game with on sunday morning. basically i had my hat at my feet [although for the game my hat was a “jellyfish”] and the kids would try to steal it every time i turned around and wasn’t looking at them. when i turned back around, they had to freeze. if anyone moved,...
after an almost 3 month hiatus i am SO ready to get back out to camp again. the weather sucks but it’s going to be an awesome weekend. ready to meet some awesome kids and see some transformations.
i am so brokenhearted. it is killing me that i can’t do more for haiti. i want to go. i want to help. but even if i were able to get there, there’s not much i can do. money is being donated, but it is nearly impossible to get supplies to the people who need them. 3 million people are in need of food and water, and so far only a few hundred thousand ready-to-eat food rations have...
gorgonzola polenta in tomato cream sauce with...
polenta is SO delicious. i love how versatile it is. it can be made really firm and be grilled or pan fried, or a softer almost soupy consistency. for this dish i made it softer [just using a higher water ratio] and cooked it with some olive oil, sauteed onions, and gorgonzola cheese stirred in. in the mean time i sauteed asparagus and mushrooms and “prepared” a tomato cream sauce...
it is just amazing how God puts us in places. how He ordains for us to talk to people. how He teaches us through people in contexts that we would never expect. i am completely floored by the conversation i just had on a sidewalk with a stranger and excited to see what comes of it.
in tears over the devastation in haiti. everything i’ve seen is just heartbreaking… people lying dead and injured in the streets, stuck in the rubble, afraid to go inside for fear of more aftershocks. 80% of this country lives below the poverty line and and they simply don’t have the resources to recover from this.
please donate to the relief effort - there is a great list of...
homemade ginger ale
earlier today i wasn’t feeling too hot [a little nauseous] and ended up working from home for the rest of the afternoon. i made some homemade ginger ale in hopes that it would settle my stomach a bit. mary told me about a recipe that she found with simple syrup and ginger. i altered the ratios she told me a bit - decreased the sugar and upped the ginger, and add a few tablespoons to...
how can it be that the heart of my God should long for me?
i have a problem.
i am addicted to food shopping.
seriously.
some people are addicted to shopping, some people are addicted to food, i am addicted to food shopping. since my dominion harvest boxes have stopped coming [come onnnnnnnnn april] i now need to go to the grocery store to get my food. so, i have been going to ellwoods at least 3 or 4 times a week. and the bus whenever i see it. ...
”..the world would have us to believe that the bigger we get and the better we feel about ourselves, the freer we become. This is why so many worship services have been reduced to nothing more than motivational, self-help seminars filled with “you can do it” songs and sermons. But what we find in the gospel is just the opposite. The gospel is good news for losers, not winners. It’s for those...

great review of a favorite local restaurant [and great morning coffee spot] at the corner of park and meadow. i and my family have eaten there on many occasions and it doesn’t disappoint. they also have cute colorful mismatched chairs lining the sidewalk for if you are waiting outside. great little place - check it out!

it physically hurts to think about what my life would be like without You
“a deeper knowledge of where their food comes from and a sense of outrage over how their food is being produced and a sense of hope and possibility of the alternatives springing up around the country. food, inc. is the most important and powerful film about our food system in a generation.”
last night i watched food, inc. with amanda and mary. everyone should watch this film. it was...
homemade whole wheat pasta with mushrooms and...
traditional first snowfall homemade pasta - we made this a few weeks ago after the big blizzard of ‘09. after hours of mixing and kneading and pasta pressing, we had a couple pounds of homemade pasta. mary e. had an awesome pasta recipe in her family cookbook that we decided to try upon our return from midlo. to make the sauce we sauteed onions and mushrooms and added a generous portion...
